Upcycle Project #3 - Pleated Skirt

After coming across a great pair of wide leg herringbone pants at the thrift store, I knew we had our next project! Initially I was going to turn these into a pair of knickers and vest for a little boy, but what can I say - my two little girls just melt my heart every time! How can I not turn it into something for one of them?!! I swear I will work on some boys projects too!!! Ummm...I hope.

We ended up turning one little old pair of pants originally from H&M, into a whole outfit that my girl just adores...

Want to know how you can turn this, into this:

Click HERE for the free tutorial.

And with so much left over fabric from the pants, your options are limitless with what you can continue to use your great fabric for! I chose to add some appliques to an old shirt we had lying around and make a matching hat, for yet another great holiday outfit!

Too add applique, simply cut the pattern you wish to adhere to your shirt and interface. Pin pattern to shirt and zig zag stitch around the edges.

Want to make a matching hat? I used CleverGirl's tutorial (yet again!) for her newsboy cap, left off the rim, added a strip cut on the bias around the edge, and added a rosette for the finishing touch.

The sweater? That would be Carter's for 50% off...lol, I am not that good!

Go ahead and have fun with it! Change the skirt to any style you want! Don't like pleats? Try gathering stitches! Want all knife pleats, all inverted box pleats? There are free tutorials for just about anything you are looking for on the web - it is amazing! There is no excuse to throw away those old clothes, you can turn just about anything into something new - saving your wallet and the Earth at the same time!
