Ahhhh…. fall time! Finally the season where I can wear leggings with sweaters and boots every day!!! When I thought about a fun fall themed tutorial I pictured candy corn, pumpkins, and fall colored leaves! I have always been an applique junkie. Pretty much everything I make my kids involves an applique of some kind! Reverse applique is like playing applique peek-a-boo! Follow these steps to make your own gift pouches! I loaded mine up with candy corn and pumpkins to give to my friends!
Reverse Applique Leather Pouch DIY
What you’ll need:
- Leather or Vinyl scraps (one color for pouch, and accent colors for appliques)
- Woven fabric scraps for lining
- Snaps or other preferred fastener
- Fabric Marker
- Embroidery scissors
- Pins, thread, sewing machine.
- +FREE REVERSE APPLIQUE PRINTABLES!
Take 2 squares of vinyl or leather (mine are approximately 5″x4.5″) and tape your accent leather in place on the wrong side of the leather.
Trace your reverse applique on the right side of the leather.
(Be sure to test your water soluble marker on a small piece of leather to make sure it does not damage the material.)
With a thread color of your choice, trace around your pen markings.
Carefully trim away the leather of the outer layer so that your accent leather shows through.
Create a snap tab for your pouch closure. I experimented with different sizes on all of my pouches! Take 2 scrap pieces of leather and place them wrong sides together.
Sew the shape of the tab and trim around 1/8″ from stitching.
Step 6: Assemble the Pouch!
Take 2 squares of leather (outer pouch) and 2 squares of woven fabric (lining). My dimensions are approximatly 5″x4.5″ but I also experimented with other sizes for my other pouches! The outer leather squares and inner lining squares should be the same dimension.
Place the tab in the center top of the front leather square (as pictured below.)
Place one lining square right sides together with the leather square (sandwiching the closure tab between.)
Stitch 1/2″ along the top edge.
Repeat with the remaining leather square and lining square.
Turn the squares so they are wrong sides facing and top stitch along the seam. (Don’t skip this step!!!)
Open the squares back up and place lining fabric right sides together and leather squares right sides together.
Stitch along the long sides and short leather side. Leave the short lining side open to turn.
Turn the pouch right sides out.
Fold under the raw edges of the lining bottom and pin. Stitch closed.
Add your snap closure and you are done!
I had fun creating all these fun pouches for festive fall gifts! Who wouldn’t smile at a cute pouch filled with candy! If you create something from this tutorial I would love to see it! Share it on my FaceBook page at Sewing Mama RaeAnna!
