This post is in fact two-fold. A rambling of my thoughts on some of the current state of affairs, combined with a super easy pillow DIY that these thoughts led me to make.
Citizens vs. Law Enforcement.
There it is in a nutshell. The trending news article that constantly pops up on my feed, day in and day out. Everybody has an opinion or viewpoint. Some of them make me cry, some of them make me mad, and some of them make me want to bang my head against my desk. But then there are those few that come in, that seem to speak the common sense truth, that give me hope for the future.
If only the common sense ones were reported more often. Most reporters spin things specifically to whip people into a frenzy, which is part of the reason why we have gotten into this mess. This mess of seeing the police as ‘evil’.
Maybe it’s just me. Maybe its because I happen to live in an area where SO MANY of the population of men and women serve our country. All of whom are heroes in my eyes, willing to lay down their life to protect our freedom. Maybe that is why this whole scenario is hitting me so hard. Because I view policemen in the same respect. Policemen, firemen, teachers, doctors, and the men and women who serve our country = HEROES.
They get up every day to go to their job, all in an effort to help others…and most of them get paid next to nothing to do it. Heroes. Full stop.
Does that mean there is not a bad apple in the bunch? Of course. The same goes for all human beings. There will always be a morally corrupt priest, teacher, bus driver, NFL player, etc. We are human beings, none of us are good. We all sin. And some sins should have just consequences. But one bad apple doesn’t make the whole bushel evil.
And now as of yesterday, Je Suis Charlie.
I just don’t understand how any person, irregardless of race, color, ethnicity, religious beliefs, or whatever…I just don’t understand how anyone can think it is ok or justified to take the life of another human being. Its just horrible.
The World Needs LOVE.
And as I was thinking of ‘Love’ themed Valentine’s Day Decor for the absolute beginner, this pillow kept popping into my head. The world needs LOVE. We all need a little bit more love and grace in our lives. No matter the situation, if we took just a minute before responding to put ourselves in the other person’s shoes. If we just thought about it for that one split second, the way we respond would be vastly different. Just that split second of thought, of treating someone the way YOU would want to be treated, it would make a world of difference.
- 1/2 – 3/4 yd of fabric
- Fabric Paint
- Freezer Paper
- Tin Foil
- Xacto knife
- Basic Sewing Essentials
- Love Sweet Love template (download link above)
Step One: Print out the template to your desired size. You might want to crop the template in half and print out the top half, and then the bottom half for a larger pillow. Trace template onto the dull side of a piece of freezer paper, and cut out with Xacto knife. (Alternatively, you may use a cutting machine for this if you have one – like the Silhouette Cameo). Iron the freezer paper shiny side down directly onto a piece of fabric. Place a piece of tinfoil underneath your fabric to help protect the surface you are working on. Using fabric paint and a paint brush, carefully paint the cut out letters on your freezer paper directly onto the pillow. Allow to dry fully.
Step Two: Once dry, peel away the freezer paper to reveal your design.
Step Three: Cut out the front of your pillow, around your letters based on the desired finished size of your pillow (adding 1″ for seam allowance). Repeat for the back pillow pattern piece.
Step Four: Place front and back right sides together, and pin around all edges. Leave a 5″opening along the bottom for turning. Sew. Turn pillow right side out, pushing out the corner edges with your finger. Stuff with Polyfil.
Step Five: Pin the opening closed and whipstitch.
And you are finished!
At the end of the day, this is just a stupid pillow DIY.
But really, if it helps just one person. That when they stop and look up at it as they are going about their day, if it helps them perhaps change their mind about a situation or person. Helps them to show a little more grace, helps them to receive a little more grace in their own life…well then, it is worth it.
Don’t you think?
Lastly, back to the topic at hand. On the flip side, I have also read some truly heart breaking stories in the past month regarding racism in our country. Things that I am quite obviously oblivious to. Things that made me at first scratch my head and say, ‘Really? That is still going on?!!’ As a white female, I am clearly very naive on the subject. I grew up in a city where all different ethnicities lived together. I mean – it was just outside of New York City. It doesn’t get more diverse than that. But the stories I have read lately have absolutely opened by eyes. Things I just never thought of, because it wasn’t a part of my world. People are mad. People are angry. People are sad. People are tired of living their life on egg shells. And after hearing some of their stories, I get it. I would be too.
My heart breaks.
Something’s gotta give. And just like the LA riots back in 1993, here we are today.
Isn’t it time for a change?
